CITYSCAPES:  THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR URBANITES

What speaks more eloquently of our 21st century lifestyle than a cityscape?  When we consider a painting of Manhattan’s skyline, for instance, we don’t even need a title for the piece:  the Chrysler building and the Empire State building are iconic American images.  By day, cities gleam from the sun and by night they illuminate the darkness themselves, with their own incandescent liveliness.  Neon signs, halogen streetlamps and fifty-foot tall billboards make a cityscape’s light by night enchanting to one and all.

If you have been a visitor to a big city, you may be even more inclined to purchase a cityscape as a memento, rather than a full-time city dweller whose purchase may be of a bucolic scene.  Say, for example, that you have visited New York City and its Broadway scene enthralled you.  You could commission a painting of Broadway, replete with all the trappings of your visit the shine of a recent rain on the pavement, the theater marquee lit with the play which you enjoyed that memorable night.  An abstract artist will take your commission a step further, and suggest the differing shades of night sky by his choice of grays and blacks, guided by his artist’s eye for tones.  You will wind up with a truly unique piece that speaks to your style and happy memories.

Cityscapes enliven your personal living area, and they couldn’t be placed any better than in a living room as a conversation piece at your next party with friends.  Your company will admire the cityscape and ask you questions about its location, that is, if it isn’t the aforementioned famous Manhattan skyline!  The bright jangling life of a city can be portrayed by a modern urban jungle, but for a moment, let’s think back on the origins of the cityscape, the picturesque renderings by Vermeer of his beloved city, Delft.  Far from having the skyscrapers of today’s megalopolis, Delft sported buildings that translated to no more than seven stories in our modern-day terms, yet the bustling nature of the city comes through grandly.  Delft relied upon waterways to move its goods and the View of Delft shows piers and boats making their way upon the calm watery thoroughfares in an analog to a modern city’s boulevards.  For a patron who desires a cityscape but can do without all that asphalt, an abstract painting in the style of a Vermeer produces a less sprawling cityscape, but a cityscape nonetheless.

Reducing the scale of a cityscape further, we move along to the townscape, which is exactly as it sounds: a smaller version of a cityscape, based upon a small town or perhaps even a part of suburbia.  Buildings of lesser height, fewer citizens on view on the streets, and a somewhat friendlier mood will add classic townscape qualities of a piece done in this scaled-down genre.  For a quieter spot in the home than the living room, a townscape will fill the bill for art nicely.  And so we have worked our way down from a modern metropolis to a historical city to the cityscape-in-miniature, the townscape.  Whatever your mood and resources are, you can’t go wrong by indulging your desire for a cityscape.

Decorate your home or office with this high quality, original modern abstract painting.
